I'm all for peace. I would LOVE to be able to visit Karachi Pakistan and not be concerned for my safety. I would LOVE to watch the evening news and see where Israel and Syria are competing for the World Cup instead of the Golan Heights.

Unfortunately, it won't happen in my lifetime and there's no amount of talk that's going to bring it about. There is a small minority of the muslim religion that would rather see me dead than talk about anything. Granted, there is a small minority in most religions that are off the wall, bark at the moon, nuts. Christians have the Klan but we have marginalized them to the point where they are a laughing stock. Muslims simply must deal with their own noisy minority...in that camp there can be discussion.

As long as that noisy minority continues to kill my human brothers and sisters for no other reason than to make some bizarre point I will continue to support the full out war against them whether it's the Lebanese Army, the Al Anbar Sheiks, the Philipino Army, or the US Armed Forces.

Thanks for proving my point, Pilgrim.

You apparently argue that Israeli reprisals in the Palestinian territories help the security of westerners in Karachi. Otherwise you would either support the petition or not mention you (A westerner?) in Karachi.

I share the Avaaz goals, I am scared sh#$less by these methods. I believe strongly "the clash of civilizations" exist only in the minds of those who listen to extremist jingoism. Something common among GOPers, and the few jihadi`s who no longer care about their immediate fight and go global, like Bin Laden. This is something I would hate to see even a whiff of among the moveon crowd.

Seriously this is a video that aims to stop a "clash of civilizations".... by trowing westerners and Muslims on two big separate piles and trivializing their conflicts.... way to go!

Can you think of a stronger way of validating the "there is a clash" idea than by saying: "The westerners (us with the girl on the left) and Muslims (us with the girl on the right) are two big distinct groups bombing each other but not all westerners are Abu Graihb loving porn stars and not all Muslims autocratic terrorist, its just the united fronts of their respective leaders!"

Lets not bother pretending there are many Palestinians who think Bin Laden is any real help to their cause. And lets not pretend the Lebanese that recently rose to the streets were on the "anti-clash side", they were with Hizbullah and a Christian party. And as for the Egyptians who want democracy, maybe it is wise to subtract the Muslim brotherhood part of those numbers. There is a strong "elections? Great, but only once" vibe there. In fact, a "popular" fight against the autocratic often western backed moderate leaders (Egypt, Saudi Arabia) is what unites the few regionally united Muslim fighters around guys like Bin Laden!

Lets not bother pretending Europeans need to stop letting Bush represents them... (WTF?) Where did the authors of the video get the idea this was ever the case? The day Bush came to power the affluent of Europe saw in Bush a treat to the economy and currency of their nr. 1 export destination, the rest saw a cowboy. It was downhill from there. Trust me, his credibility need not be contested in Europe! Blair is an fluke, Aznar was going anyway, and its not like his supporters were pro-terror, in fact, they often liked his tough stance on ETA. Europeans for putin, seriously? Overall much of Europe has had waves of popular isolationism and xenophobia that more extreme than the views of its leaders. Not my example of "people power against the clash". And French leaders may very well lead Lebanon to some form of peace long before the French public has a clue.

There is no need to stop a "clash of civilizations", there is plenty of civil war within civilizations to keep people from uniting against "greater enemies" for quite some time.

And since they were missing let me include the people of Chechnya and those living in Kashmir in the debate. If you worry about a clash, why not read up on the theory, instead of reinforcing the rightfully questioned "ignorant American" stereotype by ignoring the dead of not just blown up trains, but a theater, hospital and school! Don`t tell me you forgot those horrible images form Beslan FFS Beslan! Or do Russians and Indians have the wrong skin color and cold war history to be mentioned in this video?

Lets just not bother pretending Chechens of any faith have a need to hate Russians for "their freedom" instead of just the ruins of Grozny. And Russia and the west friends? They cant even trade gas or decide who should rule Ukraine normally!

And if you go for the people power angle than leaving out Pakistan may be a smart move, even if it reinforces the "hypocritical" label. Though the Pakistani protest are simply the ones which look the best on camera (I love those suits Gentlemen, more British than the brits ;-)), many in India admit that they could have a worse peace partner in charge of nukes than Musharaf.

This movie needlessly scares people into the clash mindset. And with that it does greater harm than whatever good cause it hopes to scare people into. How about a "lasting peace in the middle east" petition without the scaremongering. Seriously, this video has people running out to get duct tape before they get to signing the petition. Please tell me the "clash" mindset is limited to GOPers.

You don`t win an imaginary war by saying the imaginary sides need to shake hands, you snap out of the carefully spun cold war era xenophobic nightmare and solve real-world problems! Dont make peace in the middle east because to stop fighting elsewhere, make peace in the middle east because its the right thing to do!

The video says there are only four kinds of people: westerners, Muslims western leaders and Muslim leaders... and then says the people are kinda alike. But it never stops using the "two sides one war" oversimplification. Its this oversimplification allows people to be driven apart. stop calling for "us" and "them" to make peace, call for people to make peace.

Joe:

Your sentiment is OK, but I'm afraid you're talking nonsense. There is indeed a clash of civilisations, between people who think free speech and free intellectual debate and free, equal lives for women and those who think the complete oppposite: who refer everything back to a boring old book written hundreds of years ago. There's no 'we're the same as you' possible with such a dramtically different interpretation of humanity and life.

Palstinians are wrong, and they will continue to suffer, because they hate Israel and have done so for 50 years, train their children to hate Israel, and do not accept their existence. And that particular conflict, just one that you see wherever you find Islam, inflammes worldwide Ummah victimhood and there's no sign of it stopping, Hamas being the best example why.

I'm not arguing with you - even more so on the internet which allows the most mindless kind of exchanges, making whatever person A says equal to person B despite the fact that A can be a complete idiot (drunk, high on drugs, or with a pathological fixation with an old book), but will jsut say you are talking nonsense. I suspect you of Moslem sympathies, and what you are trying to do is improve the image of of a religion thats been vioolent, divisie and intolerant ever since Mohammed - compared to a multicultural West, where many differnet people have worked out ways of living together. But not Islam - wherever you see moslems, you see conflict, divisions, and hostility. 9/11 is just the most dramatic example of their inherent hostility - theres plenty more of it, and it never stops.
