Burma cyclone--Stand with the People

The cyclone that ripped through Burma left tens of thousands dead and a million homeless--a natural disaster made much worse by the failure of the military junta to warn or evacuate its people.

Now, the government has slowed the urgent process of providing humanitarian relief--so Avaaz is raising funds for the International Burmese Monks Organization, which will transmit funds directly to monasteries in affected areas.

Gaza Conflict - Ceasefire Now!

Israel and Gaza are on the brink of war. A ground assault has left many dead, and the rain of rockets only spreads. With international help, this could make civilians on both sides safer.

Peace itself is at stake in the coming days, as are thousands of lives. But both sides know they are in a battle for global legitimacy, and international opinion matters. We need to raise a massive worldwide outcry for a Gaza ceasefire now - sign the emergency petition below, we will deliver it to senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders and in a billboard campaign:

Rights, not Guns for Zimbabwe

Dockworkers across Southern Africa have blocked a Chinese arms boat from reaching Zimbabwe... but the crackdown continues. China weighs whether to recall the weapons--African unions, citizen groups, and church organisations are launching a campaign to stop any new arms from fuelling the Zimbabwe crisis.

Avaaz is joining with them and a global coalition including Oxfam, Amnesty, and IANSA to build support throughout Africa and round the world. Stopping the arms is a concrete step leaders can take to help bring justice to Zimbabwe. Add your name below now--we hope to unveil the petition in Southern Africa before next week!

Update: Desmond Tutu has joined the call. Click to see his statement here!

Global Civil Society has written a sign-on letter to the leaders of the Southern African Development Community. Click here to see the letter and add your organisation.
