Bankers behind bars

To Chancellor George Osborne:

As citizens concerned about the wave of banking crises that are affecting our country and our livelihoods we call on you to take action to ensure that individual bankers are held responsible. This can only be done by introducing criminal sanctions for bankers who ride roughshod over regulations or break our laws. The Financial Services Bill offers the perfect opportunity to introduce criminal sanctions and protect the public from these white collar crimes.

Bankers behind bars
Barclays CEO Bob Diamond has resigned in the wake of revelations that his bank tried to rig interest rates to cheat the system, but he's still at liberty to enjoy the £100 million he’s been paid by Barclays. But if we raise our voices right now, we can get the Chancellor to pluck up the courage to put guilty bankers behind bars.

Chancellor Osborne says he might seek to change the law so that corrupt bankers face actual jail time, but the powerful British Bankers Association -- headed until this week by Barclays Chair Marcus Agius -- is working hard to stymie this move. Only a public push from across the UK, delivered via the media, will get our law changed to truly punish white collar banking crimes.

The banking industry is largely to blame for our financial crisis and has been caught red-handed once again, yet the chief culprits have stayed out of prison because successive governments were in bed with the titans of finance. But the tide may be turning. Let’s seize this moment to call for bankers to be put behind bars when guilty of financial crimes. Sign the petition on the right, and send widely.
