Collectively 100,000 people from 181 countries have helped make climate change the top priority on the agenda for the Summit of G8 leaders on June 6th. But agenda setting on its own is nothing; climate change is an urgent problem that requires immediate action.

If 100,000 people can set the priorities for a major international summit, imagine what 1 million people could do! Avaaz will be presenting their petition at the June Summit, to remind the G8 leaders of their responsibility to the citizens of the world. The G8 is a summit of world leaders from the "Group of 8" largest economies. Together, these countries account for 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions--the gases that cause climate change. G8 action and leadership on climate change is vital, as it sends a strong message to the rest of the world. This is particularly crucial as discussions for a post Kyoto agreement are due to begin in 2008, and the stance the G8 take in the run up to these discussions will determine the level of action taken by all countries to halt catastrophic climate change.

Avaaz has been relentlessly pressing world leaders for action on climate change with a global petition and a TV ad aired on three continents. Our efforts are working- the agenda has been set; the time for action has come. With a significant global petition, we can make the case that the world is ready for aggressive leadership on climate change--and pave the way for truly historic commitments at the G8 summit this June.
