When reality TV goes too far

Luc Portelance, President of Canada Border Services Agency:

As concerned citizens, we urge you to stop filming raids on immigrant workers, immediately sever ties with all reality television and broadcast companies and commit to ending this insensitive practice. Filming workers as they are being hauled away from their families for deportation is neither “respectful” nor “courteous”, as enshrined in your charter, and we urge you to abide by these principles.

When reality TV goes too far
Last week armed border guards raided a Vancouver construction site to lock up immigrant workers and they brought an American-style TV crew to film the whole thing! This is supposed to be about families' lives -- not reality TV -- let’s make sure this perverse material is never filmed for entertainment again.

Nothing could be more painful for a family than watching a father be ripped away. But Canada’s border security agency made a deal with a TV company to film their agents as they tear families apart and then broadcast it on national TV -- all for profit. The border agency’s charter commits them to protect our borders with “respect, privacy and confidentiality." Let’s force them to follow their own rules by speaking up and demanding an end to this perverse partnership.

This filth doesn’t belong on our airwaves, and if we act now we can help stop it. When 50,000 Canadians sign, we’ll deliver our message to the President of the border agency in unforgettable fashion. Sign now!
