CALL EU LEADERS -- LIFT THE GAZA BLOCKADE

If enough of us call our leaders now, we could create a wave of public pressure that pushes them from words to action at Thursday's meeting. Please use this tool to find your Heads of States telephone number. Below are some useful tips and talking points that will facilitate your phone call.

Things to say:

1) Introduce yourself and tell the person on the line that you're calling as a citizen of the country and that you want to leave a message for your country’s leader about Gaza before the European summit on Thursday .

2) Say that the strong EU Foreign Ministers’ statement on Monday was welcome, but urge your leader to press for the blockade to be fully lifted, not just eased or modified – trade and people, as well as humanitarian aid must be able to transit through all the crossing points, with appropriate international monitoring to ensure Israel’s security.

3) Urge your leader to press Israel to accept a full international investigation into the raid on the Gaza flotilla , and not to accept a national-led whitewash.

4) Express the hope that the Council meeting on Thursday will move from words to action – by calling an extraordinary meeting of the EU-Israel Association Council to review cooperation in light of recent events.

You could add:

  • Concern that the Blair-Netanyahu proposals to modify the blockade are insufficient, and from experience are unlikely to be implemented anytime soon.
  • The fact that the Red Cross has now clearly stated the blockade is illegal and a crime of collective punishment under international law.
  • The fact that the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) provided credible monitoring of Egyptian Rafah border in 2005-07, and this EU border mission could return and extend its services to all borders if Israel would cooperate.
  • Mention that there is broad support for what we’re urging -- nearly 500,000 people worldwide have signed a petition that calls for an immediate international investigation into the flotilla assault, full accountability for those responsible, and the immediate lifting of the Gaza blockade.
  • Support for Red Cross access to the prisoner Gilad Shalit and his release as part of a prisoner exchange.

Important - After the call:

Please take a moment to register and share the details of your call with others around Europe -- press "make a comment" and tell everyone about it . Avaaz will publicize the number of phone calls and the responses from the EU. The only way to monitor the number of calls made is through people posting feedback!

After that, don't forget to spread the word about the campaign by using the tool below the Live-Chat or forwarding the original email to friends and family. Thanks again for all that you do!
