The police brought guns and dogs

To New Brunswick Premier David Alward, Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud, and Environment Minister Danny Soucy:

As citizens alarmed by the lack of consultation with the Mi’kmaq First Nation before the granting of fracking exploration rights to SWN, and by the police’s excessive use of force to disperse protesters, we urge you to immediately begin consultations with the Mi’kmaq to arrive at a mutually acceptable, peaceful resolution to this crisis, before their traditional land is allowed to be fracked.

The police brought guns and dogs
New Brunswick is at a boiling point after heavily armed cops used dogs and pepper spray to break up Mi’kmaq protesters. Unless we raise our voices now this standoff could turn even uglier.

The Mi'kmaq want to stop a fracking project that will pollute traditional lands and could poison the water their children drink. For three years they have called for dialogue, but the government has ignored them and now responded with repression. After this weekend's shame, the Premier has been forced to meet with First Nations leaders, but unless he feels massive public pressure to stop the dangerous drilling, the situation could explode.

Let’s make sure Premier Alward knows the whole country demands he put the First Nations health and rights ahead of drillers profits. Sign now and tell everyone -- let's build a 50,000 strong petition before the meeting.
