What's happening right now in Iran is truly extraordinary -- millions of peaceful protesters taking to the streets today across the country -- refusing to surrender to the hardline regime and its militias, and raising a resounding call for truth and justice in the face of blatant vote-rigging.

The threat is all too real: today killing shots were fired into the crowd, and a growing crackdown threatens to crush this mass movement. What happens over the coming days could determine Iran's future and shape the fate of the whole Middle East.

More huge demonstrations and a national strike are planned for tomorrow, and divides are opening up in the political establishment. Let’s raise a massive global outcry in support of these brave protesters and their demands, showing them that they are not alone at this tipping-point moment, and calling on world leaders not to recognise an illegitimate government -- click here to see extraordinary pictures of the demonstrations and take action now:

Messages are flooding in from our Iranian members to all of us. From Fariba: “20.000.000 people have lost their votes for peace and human rights. The goverment wants to use this votes for every thing but PEACE. Avaaz is a persian word too and means voice. so hear our "avaaz": we need your voice too”.

From Mahmoud: “The Government has stolen the vote the people. And the people in the street are beaten badly by the police. Now the Iranian need your attention and help. Now now now do not lose the time". From Golrokh: “I’m an Iranian girl now my country is on fire… please help us.. I'm crying... I'm not politician or an activist I just love my country.. my beautiful country. I always invited people to choose... to change.. but now.. they captured our country..our home..by coup d’état. the result of election IS A BIG LIE.”

Evidence of blatant vote-rigging is mounting up: official election results are the reverse of polls conducted before the election, and the government claims opposition candidates lost in a landslide in their home towns - an almost inconceivable outcome in Iran. Both reformist and conservative opposition candidates in Iran have declared the election a fraud, as have officials of the interior ministry.

This is a crucial moment for the world and Iran -- either democracy and diplomacy triumph, or tyranny and militarism will. The international community is seeking to pursue diplomatic engagement with Iran that holds one key to peace in the Middle East, but extremists on all sides want war – and a successful coup in Iran could severely damage our hopes.
