48 hours from now, world leaders meet in London at the G20 Summit. But signs of conflict are growing, with countries trading blame and fighting over the way forward. This vital summit could fail -- and now poor people around the world stand to lose most from the deepening global economic crisis.

Instead of dividing in disarray, the whole world needs to come together to fix the system and help the vulnerable. The good news is that suddenly, bold proposals are being discussed -- to fundamentally reform international financial institutions and create $250 billion of new international reserve funds, largely channelled to poorer countries to prevent them from collapsing and help stimulate a global green recovery.

The G20 could agree to this now, and it would be a great start in bringing the world closer together. But some conservative political forces are dragging their feet -- particularly in Germany, France and Italy. Let’s deluge our leaders with messages in the next crucial 48 hours, asking them to push the G20 for the fundamental reforms and international rescue funding required -- send your own message at this link:

This crisis drives home how urgently we need to work together better, at home and internationally, and it makes the case for root-and-branch reform of the international financial system overwhelming. For starters, the International Monetary Fund’s discredited approach of punitive conditions should be replaced by responsible, equitable funding through accountable and democratic channels, helping to counter global imbalances by building a more stable and sustainable way forward.

Then making tens of billions immediately available to the world’s poor would not only be a powerful symbol of cooperation and commitment to poverty alleviation -- it would benefit the wider global economy, and provide developing countries with funding they desperately need to invest in a better future.

Citizens around the world are beginning to mobilise and take responsibility for our future – now it's the politicians' turn. Tens of thousands marched peacefully through London before the G20 Summit, wearing green hard hats to communicate our global call for a green recovery and a global rescue package. More than 22,000 of us from around the world have completed last week's global interactive poll on principles and reforms to rebuild the global economy, which found that over 95% of us supported this campaign for root-and-branch reforms and big new reserve funds to help the poorest.

We have access to the summit and are meeting with officials and leaders to help deliver our demands over the next 48 hours, but the best way to drive home the worldwide demand for bold and concerted action is for all of us, everywhere, to flood our own leaders with messages. Let’s act before it is too late: this summit is a turning point, and we sink or swim together.
