Georgia: Ceasefire and Withdrawal Now!
|
IMPORTANT UPDATE August 16th:
Russia and Georgia have agreed to a 6 point ceasefire plan with French President Sarkozy, but the situation remains precarious, with Russian troops still based deep inside Georgia. A global outcry is still needed to demand the full implementation of the peace plan and the full withdrawal of all forces. The conflict between Russia and Georgia has placed thousands of civilians in danger, and risks sparking a new cold war as relations between Russia and the United States deteriorate. The US is sending naval and other forces to the region on a humanitarian mission, but this increases the potential for dangerous incidents. The world must continue to call for a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the crisis, and warn that any nation that attempts to use aggression in this region will damage its international reputation. Sign the petition below:
To Russian President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin, Georgian President Saakashvili, and the United Nations Security Council:
As citizens of many nations, we call for an immediate ceasefire in Georgia and the full withdrawal of all combat forces. Only a peaceful, negotiated process can resolve this crisis and the status of regions such as South Ossetia - further aggression will only endanger civilians and risk escalation of the conflict. |
