The World Says No to Guantanamo

400 men are being illegally held, without charge or trial, in the U.S prison at Guantanamo Bay. The disrespect of human rights at Guantanamo goes far beyond the individuals held there: it is an assault on international law and makes America look no better than the countries it so often criticizes. As opposition to Guantanamo grows, Bush advisers are split on weather or not to shut it down. Together, we can help close down Guantanamo for good-- Let’s make our voices heard!

Petition to US President Bush: We call upon US President Bush to close Guantanamo Bay prison forever. Every detainee should be charged with a crime and tried in a legitimate court or immediately released. We further call on President Bush to respect international law and basic human rights in the handling of all current and future prisoners in US custody.

Watch our cool video --Talk is rising of a 'clash of civilizations'. But the problem isn't culture, it's politics - from 9/11 to Guantanamo, Iraq to Iran. This clash is not inevitable, and we don't want it.

What is Avaaz?

Avaaz is an online community of people from around the world that work together on urgent global problems like climate change and poverty. The internet easily and rapidly combines our voices and our strength. Emails and petitions are the beginning, the way we connect to each other and show a common voice. What can 5 million people accomplish when they act together? Anything! Avaaz is about people power, using the internet as an antidote to the politics of the rich, the powerful and the insiders. There is a gap in the world today between the world most people want, and the world we have. Together we can close that gap. Global public opinion is the new super-power—that’s you!
