Selling India's health to the EU
Minister of Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma :
The India-EU Free Trade Agreement threatens millions of poor farmers and sick patients in India. It will also risk the lives of millions of people across the developing world who rely on cheap and high-quality Indian medicines to survive. The intellectual property standards that the EU is demanding through this deal simply places the interests of a few large corporations over the the survival of sick people. As a well known friend to Africa and a man who cares about people living with long term illnesses and disabilities in India, we urge you not to sign this deal.

For years India has made life saving medicine affordable for millions here and all around the world. But now, Minister Sharma is heading to Brussels to make final decisions in a secretive trade treaty between India and the European Union. This treaty will likely benefit big pharma and make drug prices skyrocket so sick people, especially the poor, can no longer afford them. India’s farmers stand to lose big too.
Our courts just ruled against drug giant Novartis, keeping cheap drugs in reach of cancer patients. Minister Sharma strongly welcomed the result -- now we need to remind him to take the same pro-poor stance and put India’s health above big pharma. We have only one week to to convince him to act.
