The Prime Minister’s office says it will decide their fate in the next few weeks. The key player in this savage decision is Minister of the Interior Eli Ishai -- and last week he declared he won't hesitate to cause a coalition crisis and resign if these children, according to him a "demographic danger", are allowed to stay. Ishai himself has found the simplest solution to this: let’s call on him to resign, as he is not able to fulfill his ministerial duty. As the Minister of Interior, Ishai is responsible not only for the Jewish citizens of Israel, but also for these children. In 1977, in his first decision as PM, Begin sent a clear message about Israel, when he declared his intention to accept Vietnamese refugees in desperate need of shelter. More than 30 years later, Ishai is menacing not only the 1,200 children and their families, but also the image of democratic Israel as Begin tried to shape it, and as it is ought to be. This is not the first time Ishai has promoted bigoted positions - sometimes it is about the gay community, on other occasions Israeli Palestinians and now the children of work immigrants. Ishai has proven he cannot function as our Interior Minister - he simply refuses to recognize the rights of so many of us.
