Israel’s failure to hold our own independent investigation is starting to do major damage to our international reputation. Deputy PM Dan Meridor, Government Legal Advisor Menni Mazuz and others are calling for a national commission of inquiry -- an initiative also promoted by friendly states like the US, France and the UK. There’s no doubt Cast Lead left unanswered questions that bear on Israel’s democratic health, and there may be lessons to learn: How were decisions influenced by the national election campaign? Was the killing of hundreds of Palestinian civilians - confirmed also by the military reports -- considered as a likely consequence of the military strategy authorised by the political leadership? Public pressure triggered the inquiries after the first and second Lebanon wars, which were crucial for Israel’s public debate and decision-making. During the operation in Gaza the public and media debate sat quiet - but when Israel’s reputation and future democracy is at stake, it’s time for us ourselves to act -- to ask the crucial questions and establish the truth beyond doubt or challenge. The main opponents to a commission of inquiry are those who commanded the operation in Gaza -- like Barak, who was running a political election campaign at the time, and is now using his political power to prevent any serious discussion. The unilateral decision at the Human Rights Council, which even Goldstone himself objected to, marks a worrying trend in parts of global public opinion -- threatening to undermine Israeli security and chances for a two-state agreement. Israel refused to engage in or give evidence to the Goldstone process; now only an independent, credible Israeli inquiry can deflect the growing international criticism. PM Netanyahu has launched a small defensive task force on the implications of the Goldstone report, but is still trying to deflect a real inquiry -- while challenges at the UN gather pace.
