Justice for Liz

To Kenya's Inspector General of Police:

We call on you to deliver justice for Liz including the immediate arrest and prosecution of her accused rapists and laying negligence charges on the police officers who let Liz down. By holding these police officers to account for their failure to bring rape charges, you will send a strong message to police everywhere that rape is a serious crime, and that police must uphold the law or be punished. We call on you to take full responsibility and ensure Liz's case is a turning point to end Kenya's plague of sexual violence.

Justice for Liz
16 year old Liz was walking home from her grandfather’s funeral when she was ambushed by six men who took turns raping her, then threw her down a 6-meter toilet pit. Amazingly, she survived -- only to see the police release the suspects after they’d mown the police station lawn, then do everything they could to discredit her subsequent rape allegation.

Liz’s horror story sent shockwaves across the world. After 1 million of us demanded justice, one suspect was finally charged. But the others are still at large -- and the policemen who ignored Liz’s plight are still in uniform, dealing with victims every day. This is why Kenya’s rape crisis has got so bad: everyone knows people can get away with it.

Let’s make sure Liz’s nightmare marks a turning-point for Kenya’s women and girls. Click on the right to stand with Liz, and demand the police officers who let her down so badly are fired -- when we reach 2 million signers we’ll make these “lawnmower police” so famous that no police officer ever dares ignore a victim’s plight again.

PS: Liz is a pseudonym given by the news outlet that broke her story and has since been widely used. She is not pictured here.
