Dear leaders at the East Asia & ASEAN summits,

As one of your citizens, I write on behalf of the people of Myanmar, who are refused a true voice at your summit. Please join and pledge practical support to a genuine, time-bound dialogue and transition in Myanmar, and to the efforts of Ibrahim Gambari and Ban Ki-Moon. Words will not be enough. Together, you hold extraordinary leverage - military, financial, economic, political, diplomatic and energy relationships. Until Myanmar is on a better road, "business as usual" cannot continue.

You must use all your avenues of influence to demand that every political prisoner - particularly Aung San Suu Kyi - is freed and a meaningful, time-bound dialogue with the opposition begun, leading to a swift transition to civilian democratic rule. Only a genuine process should be acceptable to you, because only this will ensure regional peace and stability in future. Take a lead in coordinating action through the UN, and use every private lever you have. Do so, and the people of Myanmar - and of all Asia - will thank you.
