South Africa Needs Clean Energy, Not Coal!

To the World Bank President and Executive Directors:
The proposed R29 billion World Bank loan to Eskom South Africa should not be extended because it would contribute to energy poverty, environmental destruction and climate change worldwide. We call on you to reject the loan and, instead, to finance renewable energy and efficiency projects.

In just days, the World Bank will vote on a proposed R29 billion loan to Eskom to build the fourth-largest coal plant in the world -- a climate disaster.

At the same time, Eskom plans to effectively double electricity rates over the next three years. Big polluters are getting cut-rate electricity while ratepayers will be left to pay back this disastrous loan.
