Demanding the Right To Work With My Headscarf (Başörtülü Çalışma Hakkı)
Basortulu .
started this petition to
Yeni Anayasa, The New Constitution
We women in Turkey who wear headscarves, and who are citizens of this
country, demand the lawful right to be able to work in all jobs to be
ensured in the new constitution.
We are tired of being treated differently than men, than from other citizens of this country and as an exception among other countries. Despite constituting almost half of this country as covered women, demanding our rights we have constantly been told that it is too early, that we have ulterior motives which we were aware and unaware of, and that it there are more important issues to be dealt with. Although women as of 2010 are finally able to attend universities with their headscarves, they are still discriminated against, treated as ‘invisible’ in society and it is still forbidden for women to apply for jobs in the government sector if they wear headscarves. This makes us reliant on the whims of the the private sector, negatively affects the employment of women in general and is more importantly a breach of a basic universal right to religious and individual freedoms. This ban and attitude is one of the many products of the military coup in Turkey which we still face the consequences of today. It has succeeded in creating a divided nation in which today even the groups it aimed to suppress have accepted and internalised injustices such as this ban. We are signing this petition to demand our rights and the formation of a civilian constitution which is representative of all groups in this country and in which we are each more free with all our differences.
By signing this petition, we want the government to know that we demand our rights, that we have no more lives to wait nor will accept to give up our identities. In order to achieve this we need your support and solidarity.
