Benigno Aquino III, president of the Philippines: Allow divorce
Because under the current Philippine law divorce is not possible. A marriage can only be annulled, separation is possible under certain strict conditions but it prevents remarriage.
As such the Philippines are the ONLY country besides the Vatican without possibility to divorce.
Grounds for annulment are very strict and minimal. Adultery, Homosexuality or physical violence are not accepted as reasons for annulment. Basically the law as it currently exists turns many people especially women into modern day slaves, unable to escape from an adulterous or violent husband or a bad marriage.
Divorce is, as George Bernard Shaw once said in 1908:
“not the destruction of marriage, but the first condition of its maintenance. A thousand indissoluble marriages mean a thousand marriages and no more. A thousand divorces may mean two thousand marriages; for the couples may marry again. Divorce only re-assorts the couples: a very desirable thing when they are ill-assorted.
Indissoluble marriage is an academic figment, advocated only by celibates and by comfortably married people who imagine that if other couples are uncomfortable it must be their own fault, just as rich people are apt to imagine that if other people are poor it serves them right.”
