One of the most contested dams in Portugal ever, Foz Tua dam goes on with its construction, even after UNESCO has harshly criticized the process and demanded hard measures, otherwise the Upper Douro region would be declassified as World Heritage.

The conclusion of the dam is predicted to be about 20 to 30 times more costly than its cancellation. The National Plan of Dams with High Hydropower Potential (PNBEPH) will cost about 16 billion Euros, equivalent to 1600 Euros per Portuguese. However, the Foz Tua dam will produce just 0.1% of the total electrical energy of the country, and will increase 10% of the electrical bill (plus the already predicted increases).

The government of José Sócrates attributed a subsidy of 30 million Euros per year to each of the new hydropower facilities of PNBEPH, and, of course, EDP (“Energias de Portugal”, means “Energies of Portugal”) projected dams everywhere, even where it makes no sense at all. The Foz Tua dam, or the Baixo Sabor dam, among others, were the result. A wonderful landscape is going underwater, one of the most beautiful centenary railways in the world is will be destroyed (which soon could had have connection with the actually in construction railway in Puebla de Sanabria – Spain), the people from Trás-os-Montes region and their costumes get even further away from the world, a huge useless lake will be created degrading the quality of the water of Douro river, habitats of unique and protected species will be destroyed… and all this for money? These play games are armful, and it is not hard to see that, just look at the money loaned from European Union to Portugal, and all the measures the government has taken towards the Portuguese people to overcome the crisis.

The Tua region has proven to be more than a dam, the number of tourists has grown exponentially last years (unfortunately, what contributed most for this region to be known were the successive derailments and accidents in Tua railway last years). Our children and grandchildren for sure will be proud of us to know we stopped this tragedy. Let’s be the heroes, not the complainers.
