The State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, Greece, is the one and only conservatory run by the Greek State. As a result, almost 500 students who study there, ranging from children to adults, can do so without paying any tuition fees. That, of course, is great for those families of talented musicians, who cannot afford to pay for music lessons.
The Conservatory houses an important music library that contains music scores, CDs, DVDs, archives, rare manuscripts and books (approximately 15.000 volumes) on the Art of Science of Music, and owns expensive instruments (a collection of rare and traditional instruments, grand pianos, harpsichord, percussions, harps, double basses etc), opera costumes, paintings, etc.
Music is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Not a commodity for the aristocracy, but destined for the entire society. The State Conservatory of Thessaloniki holds an important position in the lives of numerous Greeks. It is a symbol, an idea that must not die! It needs permanent housing to continue providing its high-level music studies totally gratis.
