The oceans are being fished out at an extraordinary rate. We are fishing down the ecological chain, from large to small, using the most potent modern technology. We have already been reduced to harvesting jellyfish, which have become more numerous as the fish disappear. Canada is one of the most egregrious offendors, having squandered its massive cod fishery completely by 1992, forcing the closing of the Atlantic cod fishery, and putting 40000 people out of work. Despite signing many international agreements to protect at least 20% of its oceans by 2012, Canada has done nothing. There is no excuse for Canada to continue its pattern of deceit, neglect and absolute failure to learn. Canada must be shamed into learning from its mistakes and honoring its international agreements -- and quickly.
