Independent funding to find the cause(s) of autism

As a father of a teenager who was diagnosed ten years ago with autism, I urge the coalition to provide whatever resources are necessary to fund proper, scientific research, independent of any commercial interests into the causes of this debilitating condition. As the numbers soar in the USA (currently as high as 1 in 29 in New Jersey), the future cost implication to the nation in real terms and in emotional terms to the individual families concerned is immense.
How high does the figure have to rise to before we decree that the problem is now of epidemic proportions?
I also urge that the current employment rate of adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in either part-time or full-time work of any kind is a disgrace and a waste of both lives and resources. Only 12% of adults find any work and live independently. No other group of individuals are effectively excluded from the workplace as someone with ASD.
