Italy: access to birth records
Gloria C.
started this petition to
Members of the Italian Parliament
Italian-born adoptees who were not recognized at birth (i.e.: if their biological mothers chose anonymity) such as myself, must wait 100 years before they are allowed to access their birth records (Italian legislation n. 184/1983 art. 28 & n. 149/2001 art. 24).
This means that they will never know their origins, where they come from, their health background, whether they have any siblings or relatives etc.
The present Italian legislation has been deemed unconstitutional by many legal experts and even the European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Italy’s confidentiality laws (Case of Godelli vs. Italy, application n. 33783/09).
By signing this petition you are going to help me and thousands of other Italian born adoptees in Italy and around the world (for your information, more than 3700 Italian “orphans” were adopted by American or Canadian families in the 1950s, 60s, 70s and are now American or Canadian citizens ... others live in France, The Netherlands, Australia, etc. ... ) to finally gain access to their birth origins, come to terms with their past, and reunite siblings separated by adoption.
You will also be assisting us in overcoming the strong lobby composed of certain political and religious groups and a few adoption associations who are against the proposed change to the current Italian legislation and who would like to maintain the status quo and perpetuate their stronghold on a very lucrative market.
