On June 13, 2013, Berta Caceres, feminist Lenca leader in Honduras faces trial in the Department of Santa Barbara. The Lenca indigenous are fighting to defend their lands, while the Honduran government is criminalizing social and political dissent including against Caceres. Several complaints have been filed in the OAS InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights. Berta Cáceres was arrested on May 24 for one day in Santa Barbara by the Honduran military, who claimed they found a gun in the back of her truck. She was traveling to support a 55-day protest by the Rio Blanco community against a massive hydroelectric dam Agua Zarca proposed by the Honduran company FICOHSA and the multinational SINOHYDRO. The project is located on the Gualcarque River in Lenca territories. The communities were not consulted, which violates Convention 169 of the ILO (International Labor Organization) that requires that indigenous communities by consulted for projects such as this on their ancestral lands.
