Since the strengthening of Canada’s gun control law in 1995, there are approximately 400 fewer firearms deaths (murders, suicides and accidents) per year. The number of homicides with long guns (rifles and shotguns, the weapons that were the most subject to new controls) fell by 41% and the number of spousal homicides decreased by 64% — contributing to record low levels of murders of women.

The Conservative government has chosen to ignore these facts. Its Bill C-19 will end the registration of long guns, destroy the data on 7 million long guns circulating in Canada, and eliminate the requirement to show a permit to acquire such a gun as well as the obligation to document any sales transactions.

We are therefore appealing to Senators to vote in favour of public safety and against Bill C-19.
