Chief Minister of Karnataka; Police Commissioner of Bangalore
Swar Thounaojam, a well-known playwright and theatre director was driving her car at 7 PM on 5/12/12 when her car was rear ended by a biker. She got down to talk to him when he started abusing her, a crowd of men gathered and joined in abusing her. She called a traffic constable for help, and instead of helping her he tried to get the offender to escape. When she tried to stop him, he punched her, grabbed her and threw her; the offender managed to getaway. A bigger crowd that had gathered tried to touch her and pull at her clothes, when she tried to take their pictures on her mobile phone, some of them started undressing and behaving obscenely, the traffic cop joined them and laughed at her. When the police turn perpetrators it renders the system impotent. Joining a mob and assaulting a lone woman, allowing a offender to getaway and watching a woman being heckled by a mob is not merely negligence of duty but a sign that there is larger malaise in our society. It is about time we take action and demand a safe environment for women and minorities who are constantly threatened by both lumpen elements in society as well as by the police who are there to protect them.
