Sunbed Legislation Published!
Irish C.
started this petition to
Dr James Reilly TD, Minister for Health
In 2012, we asked you to help us make sure that legislation to protect children and young people was published by the Government. Hundreds of you emailed your TDs about the importance of sunbed legislation and signed a petition calling on the Minister for Health to prioritise the legislation. We were delighted to see the publication of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Bill 2012 in December 2012. The legislation will ban people under 18 from using sunbeds and will require sunbed operators to make users aware of the risks of sunbed use. However, we would like to see the legislation and ban people with the fairest skin types (type 1 and type 2) from using sunbeds and will be campaigning for this as the legislation makes its way through the Oireachtas. Thank you for taking the time to support our campaign.
There is currently no regulation of sunbed use in Ireland, meaning that children under 18 and those with very fair skin can use sunbeds without proper warning or supervision. Sunbeds are rated as being as carcinogenic as tobacco and plutonium. Research shows that people who use a sunbed before the age of 30 have a 75% increased chance of developing melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Every year that the legislation is delayed up to 28,000 young people risk their lives and health for a tan by using sunbeds.
