Over 400 birds have been rescued during two separate disasters in the past two months on the south coast of the UK, and over 3000 more have died. Guillemots, razorbills and even puffins to name a few have been found covered in polyisobutylene (PIB), a synthetic clear lubricating oil that turns thick and sticky on contact with water. This substance clings to the feathers of seabirds, preventing them from flying and destroying the waterproofing of their plumage. And yet it is legal to discharge this substance in the sea just 12 miles off shore!
It stands to reason that something must be done as 1000's are being needlessly killed by deadly - yet legal - chemical discharges, which may also be entering our food chain!
We urgently call on you to take the lead on bringing about a change in the laws controlling this and other damaging substances to prevent such a disaster from happening again in future....
