The European Commission

Roma (inappropriately called Gipsies) are a people with a history, a language and a distinct culture. Dispersed across Europe, they suffered centuries of persecution, culminating with the Holocaust, in which a quarter of Europe's Roma population have been exterminated. In 21st century Europe, Roma people continue to suffer severe persecution, blatant discrimination and maltreatment.
