There are fewer than 3,500 tigers left in the wild . They are being killed for their body parts – mainly their skins and bones – which are bought as status gifts by the wealthy around the world. This trade is illegal under the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) but, despite being a signatory to this ban, China is fueling demand for wild tiger parts through its own domestic ‘farming’ of tigers. If nothing is done, in 10 years there will be no wild tigers left on this planet.

A Chinese civil society movement and several members of the National Peoples’ Congress are bravely campaigning to enforce China’s wildlife protection laws. They are the tigers’ best hope and they need our support.

Changing attitudes and traditions is key to reducing the trade in wild animals so it is vital to support those in China who want to challenge the way things have always been done. Only by supporting those who really understand where the demand comes from and why, can we hope to put an end to the slaughter and the cruelty and have a chance of protecting these species.
