Support Chinese civil society in helping to end the trade in tiger parts.

Why this is important

There are fewer than 3,500 tigers left in the wild. They are being killed for their body parts – mainly their skins and bones – which are bought as status gifts by the wealthy around the world. This trade is illegal under the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) but, despite being a signatory to this ban, China is fueling demand for wild tiger parts through its own domestic ‘farming’ of tigers. If nothing is done, in 10 years there will be no wild tigers left on this planet.

A Chinese civil society movement and several members of the National Peoples’ Congress are bravely campaigning to enforce China’s wildlife protection laws. They are the tigers’ best hope and they need our support.

Changing attitudes and traditions is key to reducing the trade in wild animals so it is vital to support those in China who want to challenge the way things have always been done. Only by supporting those who really understand where the demand comes from and why, can we hope to put an end to the slaughter and the cruelty and have a chance of protecting these species.

The trade in tiger parts is cruel and unnecessary and is causing a catastrophic decline in wild tiger numbers. Although China is often held up as the major source of demand for this trade, some in China are bravely standing up against the use of animals such as tigers, bears and other endangered species, and they need our support to help make their voices heard. With our help this civil society movement could force through amendments to Chinese law and save tigers for future generations.
