Urgent request for positioning with respect to Resolutions 265 and 266 by the Rio de Janeiro Medical Council - CREMERJ prohibiting the presence of midwives and doulas in maternity hospitals, and punishing doctors who support home birth, thus denying women the choice of caregivers and place of birth, against the best scientific evidence, Ministry of Health policies, and the World Health Organization recommendations. Resolution 265 prohibits the presence of physicians in home births as well as stops them from being part of a referral system in case there is need of transfer to a hospital, or they may lose their licenses. Resolution 266 prohibits the participation of doulas, university-trained midwives, regular midwives, etc. in hospital deliveries. Such resolutions by CREMERJ will have negative effects on the safety and welfare of women and their babies, increase the health risks related to over medicalization, and are an assault to women’s bodies, human rights and quality of care.
