The Government of Sri Lanka
Arbitrary arrests, detentions and intimidation of victims and defenders of human rights abuses are on the increase in the post war situation of Sri Lanka. Government propaganda advertises reconciliation and peace but there is a marked increase of military presence and surveillance in the former conflict areas in the North of the country.
There have been several such arrests and detentions during the past week. On 16th March, Mr. Ruki Fernando and Fr. Praveen Mahesan attending to families of the "disappeared" were arrested and detained. Though they were released on the 18th, the continued detention of other committed human rights defenders still reamins a great concern.
We strongly appeal to the government of Sri Lanka to decriminalize legitimate acts of support for survivors of human rights abuses and to release such detainees.
