The Victorian Government: We Ask You to Instate Drafted Dog Breeding Laws
As of the 11th of April, the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries made drastic last minute changes to its new code for dog breeders. Animal Welfare groups were pleased with the draft version of the code in December which stated that:
- A female dog must be retired from breeding after having five litters
- All breeding bitches must have an annual health check or a veterinary health check within four weeks of each mating cycle (when mating is planned) and within eight weeks post-partum, which ever is more frequent.
The laws which took effect on Friday the 11th state that:
- Female dogs must be retired after having five litters, except when owners obtain veterinary certification to indicate the dog is sufficiently healthy.
- Female dogs must have a general health check by a veterinary practitioner at least annually, or more frequently as directed by a veterinary practitioner
These new laws practically give a free pass to puppy factories to continue with their repulsive methods.
Puppy factories are severe dog breeding facilities. Also known as puppy mills or farms, they are run under highly inadequate conditions that neglect the dogs' needs in almost every aspect. Imprisoned and forced to breed for almost their entire lives, most dogs are fed every second day, rarely receive veterinary treatment and never able to walk around or excercise.
Almost 95% of puppies sold in pet shops are sourced from puppy factories (RSPCA estimate). By signing this petition you create awareness about these major changes and help have the drafted dog breeding laws instated.
