Why this is important

UNA Wales believes that gender inequality inhibits Wales' progress. A subject as great as gender equality deserves an Assembly Member's full attention, in order for there to be greater results, which the men, and women, of Wales deserve.

Some causes for action: 150,000 women in Wales suffer from some form of gender based domestic violence every year; the pay gap in Wales has increased to 12.7%, up from 10.3% in 2009; desperate need to ensure that women and men are respected and treated equally in all areas of life, for example, there is not a single women's prison in the whole of Wales, meaning that mothers struggle to see their families and friends due to being locked up in distant places.

Both New Zealand, and Denmark, with populations of similar sizes to our own, have a Cabinet Minister focusing solely on issues of gender inequality. It is time to challenge the chronic levels of gender discimination in Wales, and devote a cabinet position, and a Minister's time, and resources, solely to that of attacking systemic gender inequalities in Wales, which have so far proved resistant to change. Join UNA Wales, in its campaign of working towards gender inequality, and sign this petition to lobby for a Welsh Minister of Gender Equality, and together, we can pressure the Welsh Assembly Government into tackling this problem which all suffer from.
