With eating disorders affecting some 70 million people worldwide. Research has found that some 20% (that's 14 million people) of anorexia sufferers alone will die prematurely from their illness. Something really needs to change. I believe that a HUGE amount of this can be blamed on the media and it's unrealistic standard of beauty which no one can possibly live up to, simply BECAUSE IT'S NOT REAL. Pre 1960's eating disorders where pretty much unheard of. People often under estimate the power of photoshop. With photoshop making it easier as ever to shave inches off a waist in seconds. I propose that every published image implements a scale between 1-10 of how photoshopped/retouched the image is, but only if the image features a human figure (this wouldn't be relevant to say, landscape photography), serving as a reminder that these images aren't real because no one looks like that, not even the celebrities.

Right now there is no organisation who monitors the "honesty" of images published in magazines. I am proposing that the UK government sets up a standards rating system (a similar kind of thing to the food standards agency who monitors how honest the food labels are) that kite marks all photographs in magazines and publications that represents the human figure. To explicitly rate the extent of manipulation and enhancement to the image. Although initially I am only targeting the UK government, but eventually I would like to implement this worldwide.

I am also hoping that if this scale is implemented then it will encourage retouchers to publish more natural photos too (after all, who would want a 10 next to their image).
