Piracy: Time to tackle the root causes
|
For decades Somalia has been exploited and impoverished. A failed state, with 9 million traumatized civilians. But up until these most recent pirate attacks, the world has largely ignored their plight.
Finally, next week there is a UN-EU emergency meeting on Somalia. This is a significant opportunity and a massive global response could have a major impact on its outcomes. We need to stop piracy - and the best way is to tackle its root causes. Sign the petition below and we will deliver it at the emergency meeting. It's so important to get it right, we are also considering taking out ads in major press ahead of next week's meeting.
To Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and High Representative Solana:
As global citizens we urge you to provide meaningful support for the people of Somalia! Securing a unity government, providing food and development assistance, and cleaning up the toxic Somali waters will provide a foundation for peace and security in Somalia. The donors conference must commit to pursuing these measures to ensure that there is a meaningful and constructive response to this regional security crisis. Sign the petition! |
