Free the CBC before it's too late

To the Standing Committee on Finance:

As Canadians concerned about the independence of the CBC, we call on you to remove from the budget bill the government’s power to dictate collective bargaining and terms for other salaries and working conditions at Canada’s longstanding public broadcaster. The government must not violate what has always been and must remain an arm’s-length relationship between an independent CBC and any government in power.

Free the CBC before it's too late
The new Harper budget bill is going to do something crazy -- take hold of our public media and turn the CBC into a place where Harper's cronies could control the newsroom.

This is how tyrannical governments behave -- they try to silence and control independent media. But the bill goes into committee in days and we can get this small collection of MPs to amend the bill and take their hands off our CBC before it's too late.

Let's make sure they hear our voices. Use the talking points below to send a message directly to key members of the Finance Committee and help free the CBC:

Talking points
  • I am very concerned about the government’s plan to compromise the independence of the CBC.
  • As members of the Finance Committee you have the power to take a stand and protect our independent public broadcaster.
  • The CBC was created as a Crown Corporation to separate government from its day-to-day management activities and to let it operate as a commercial business. This will be seriously compromised if you don’t amend the budget.
  • The CBC has been a cornerstone of Canadian culture for over 80 years, fulfilling its role as a national news service and cultural outlet, free from government interference.
