Dear friends,

We're on the cusp of 2009--the most important year in climate history. By the end of this year, at a massive summit in Copenhagen, humanity will come together and reach a global accord on climate change. If the treaty is strong, it will avert climate disaster and unleash a vibrant green-energy economy. If the treaty is weak -- or, worse yet, if talks collapse--then the coming years and decades will bring rising seas, extreme hurricanes, floods, droughts, and millions of climate refugees.

We -- citizens everywhere -- will decide between these two futures. At this moment, presidents and prime ministers around the world are developing their negotiating positions for 2009's climate talks. Over the last two years, Avaaz members have shown that people power can change leaders' minds; in the last two weeks alone, more than 200,000 of us succeeded in pulling back the German government's attempt to undermine the European Union's climate agreement. In Bali last year, we moved Japan and Canada. And voters have decisively rejected climate obstructionism in the US, Australia, and other key countries.

This year is the ultimate test. And Avaaz will be launching its most ambitious, most strategic, and--if enough of us join in--most effective climate campaign yet, all focused like a laser on a strong global treaty in Copenhagen. Avaaz doesn't take money from governments or corporations--so to fund this climate campaign, we'll need resources from citizens around the world. Every bit helps.
