Justice for US military rape
To Minister of Foreign Affairs Genba Koichiro:
We call on you to open an investigation into why so many apparent crimes by US military personnel stationed in Japan are insufficiently investigated and punished. By some estimates, only 13% of reported crimes committed by US military personnel in Japan are ever prosecuted. No guest in our country should be above the law. We request an investigation now, including into whether any written or unwritten arrangements or negotiations with the US government may be to blame for this lack of justice and, if so, what needs to be done to change them.

There have been thousands of Japanese victims of crimes perpetrated by US military stationed here, but because our government prosecutes so few of them -- roughly 13% by some estimates -- many suffer in silence. Jane's brave decision to doggedly pursue her attacker, first in Japanese court and now in the US, has been an inspiration. In two weeks, she may finally get justice, but her case only begs the question of why our system lets so many US military perpetrators go free. If we make sure the Japanese media cover her precedent-setting case, we can shine a light on our government's decades-long decision to look the other way at crimes committed by US military in Japan.
Let’s stand with Jane and call on our government to launch an investigation into US military impunity in Japan. Sign the urgent petition and share with everyone -- when we reach 30,000 signatures, together with Jane we'll deliver the petition to the Foreign Ministry and the Japanese press.
