The Plan to kill Orangutans

To President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, and Governor Zaini Abdullah, Aceh Province:

We urge you to reject the plan to cut down the rainforest in Aceh, and engage the local community to develop a plan that prioritises sustainable development, and protects this uniquely fragile ecosystem, and the animals that live there. We also call on you to immediately extend and strengthen the logging moratorium that expires in May to protect the rainforests. Indonesia’s majestic forests are a global treasure and their survival is a global concern.

The Plan to kill Orangutans
I live and work in the one place on Earth where endangered orangutans, rhinos, elephants, and tigers and still roam free together -- but a Canadian gold-mining company and their friends in government are pushing a plan to bulldoze a huge part of it, and we only have days to stop it. Unless our leaders feel global heat now this unique habitat could be devastated.

A logging moratorium here in Indonesia has been a life insurance policy for our critically endangered species. But the moratorium expires in weeks, and a mining and palm oil plantation backed plan to re-name this precious place in Sumatra a "production forest" could decimate areas the size of a million football fields! We're raising hell to stop the plunder and now we need the Avaaz community's help, to kill the plan and urge the President to extend the moratorium before the chainsaws arrive.

It's crunch time and we need to act fast -- the Forestry Ministry just announced it's intent to approve this disaster, but if the President steps in and renews the moratorium we can stop it. Sign the urgent petition and tell everyone you know about this mortal threat to our majestic forest, and I'll personally deliver our global call!
