South Africa: Arrest Omar Al-Bashir for genocide -- hours to act

To President Zuma, Minister of Justice Masutha, and the Pretoria High Court:

As international citizens who believe in justice and accountability for international crimes like genocide, we call for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in South Africa. South Africa is obligated to honour the ICC’s arrest warrant, as has been made clear in decisions of the court, and must either surrender him to the ICC or pursue charges in South Africa under the ICC Act of 2002 or section 232 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The victims of Darfur deserve justice, and we call on you to give them that opportunity.

South Africa: Arrest Omar Al-Bashir for genocide -- hours to act

For years in Darfur, Sudan’s government troops terrorized the population. They killed the men. They raped girls in front of their parents. They wanted to end the history of the local people. And they’ve escaped justice. Until now.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was charged internationally with responsibility for the death of almost 500,000 people in the brutal Darfur genocide, but for 6 years no one has succeeded in locking him up. Now he’s in South Africa for a conference and a court has given an urgent order to keep him in the country while it decides whether he should be arrested – and the decision will be issued Monday.

South Africa’s ruling ANC party has already protested the order. But this is a legal decision, not a political one. The ANC should stay out of it – and South Africa should arrest Bashir and either try him for genocide, or send him to the International Criminal Court. Click now and help finally get justice for genocide.
