John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand
New Zealand markets itself as ‘100% Pure’, has some of the most beautiful landscapes and seascapes in the world, and many unique species. It was the last place on earth to be found and settled by human beings.

New Zealand’s National Government, led by John Key, has promoted oil and gas exploration and fracking across the country; and mining on pristine conservation lands like the Denniston Plateau and in World Heritage Areas. Now they want to rush through changes to the law so they can override the rights of communities to protect these special places.

The Resource Management Act (RMA) is the line in the sand that protects New Zealand’s environment, our native forests, abundant clean water, endangered species, and rugged coastlines. Passed in 1991, the Act was 20 years ahead of its time. It was a foundation laid to protect our economy, our place, and our future. The politicians who passed it knew that some things are sacred, and that ‘if you take care of the land, the land will take care of you’.

What is now proposed would change all that. The evidence marshalled in support of the changes is farcical, and the consultation process has been a sham.

We urgently need your help. The deadline for submissions is April 2, and after that the government will be considering its response. Tell John Key’s government that these beautiful islands must not be destroyed for short-term profit; and that in amending the Resource Management Act, the right of communities across New Zealand to protect and defend these unique environments must be upheld.

You can find more information about the proposed reforms on the websites of the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, Greenpeace New Zealand, and Fish and Game New Zealand.
