No Chairs for Rape Suspects

To Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress Party :

Right now, political leaders have a vital task to end India’s rape epidemic. But too many politicians are compromised because they themselves face ongoing rape and sexual assault investigations. We demand you act on the Verma Committee’s recommendation and remove your party support from all politicians and candidates who face rape or sexual assault charges. As an immediate first step, please remove P J Kurien, suspect in the Suryanelli gang rape, from the Deputy Chairmanship of the Rajya Sabha before the start of the coming session of Parliament.

No Chairs for Rape Suspects

Parliament should be totally focused on ending the rape epidemic, but the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, P J Kurien, is busy fighting his own gang rape scandal! Sonia Gandhi is debating whether he should keep his post -- together we can convince her there must be no Chairs for rape suspects.

A young woman from Kerala claims that P J Kurien was part of the gang who raped her for over 40 days. The case has been dragging for years, but the Supreme Court has just ordered a fresh investigation and calls for Kurien to step down are growing. Sonia Gandhi is under massive pressure to act for women’s rights. Let’s call on her now to take away Kurien’s Chair until this gang rape case is resolved.

This session of Parliament can't go on with rape suspects sitting inside. When 20,000 of us sign, Avaaz will deliver our voices directly to Sonia Gandhi -- sign now and share with everyone!
