Mental Health patients in the island of Jersey are being treated like 3rd class citizens.Continuous spending cuts have reduced Mental Health Care Services to the bare minimum. The number of suicides has increased so much that Samaritans are very concerned.

There is no secure unit in Jersey for mental health patients who are on trial, accused of commiting crimes. In a recent case a 50 year old woman,suffering late-onset paranoid schizophrenia,received very poor treatment in Jersey's Psychiatric Hospital and was transfered to La Moye prison. She was left in prison for 8 months,sometimes in isolation,without any mental health treatment.

Finally she was sent to a special unit in the UK where she was treated with dignity and humanity.
