Declare the spectacular Okavango Delta a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Okavango Delta, one of the largest and most pristine wilderness areas in Africa, is under threat from dams, pollution, and mining.
On the delta's lush floodplains, elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and other iconic animals number thousands and millions. Its incredible biodiversity includes 71 species of fish and over 400 species of bird. Endangered African wild dogs and black rhino find refuge in its wilderness. It is an area devoid of negative human impact, harboring one of the greatest large animal concentrations on Earth.
Every year, thousands of visitors marvel at its beauty, making it a critical element of Botswana's economy and providing sustainable livelihoods to local communities. Its ecological value and its importance to the people of Botswana are virtually unparalleled.
But all of this could change if the Okavango River that floods it each year is dammed or polluted. It is under threat from mining activities in Botswana and hydroelectric schemes in Namibia and Angola. We must act now to ensure international protection for this spectacular wilderness area. Together, we can conserve the delta for generations to come!
