Ivan Rogers, Prime Minister's Adviser for Europe and Global Issues

Incredibly, Britain is blocking climate change from being included in the main agenda of the upcoming G8 summit.

Ivan Rogers, Prime Minister's Adviser for Europe and Global Issues, is obstructing attempts by France and Germany to include climate change in the G8’s main agenda.

The G8 this year is planned to address trade, transparency and tax. Preventing climate change from being on the main agenda means that it does not need to be addressed at the summit in June. Climate change must be addressed as a priority, as issues of trade, transparency and tax will pale into insignificance without a healthy planet to reside on.

Will Straw, Associate Director of IPPR said the British government's “refusal to use its G8 presidency to promote global action on climate change undermines its claims to be the 'greenest government ever'. If the world is to reach agreement in 2015 on binding carbon targets, as our leaders claim is their ambition, then rich countries must get their act together.”

Worryingly, the UK's climate-warming emission output is actually increasing, with CO2 emissions rising by 4.5% in 2012.

LETS STAND TOGETHER AND SHOW THEM THAT WE THE PEOPLE DEMAND CLIMATE CHANGE IS ADDRESSED SERIOUSLY AND NOW BY DELIVERING A LARGE PETITION TO IVAN ROGERS.

Climate change as an issue cannot be overshadowed, its urgency is more pressing than ever. This winter is a clear example of the dramatic and devastating effects of climate change.

The people of the global north have endured freezing weather conditions into official Sping time. The cold temperatures have been connected with the excessive amounts of fresh water entering the ocean due to record arctic ice loss (now 80% less than 30years ago) altering the complex behaviours of the ocean, jet steam and wind patterns. The result has seen large parts of Europe and North America blanketed in snow and plunged into record minus temperatures for weeks.

The UK's chief scientific adviser Sir John Beddington warned that more extreme weather is likely to become more common, and in a short space of time.

This is not just a freak winter; such freak weather is likely to become the norm.

As the people of the Global North are now witnessing first hand devastating effects of climate change, their leaders are dangerously refusing to address climate change seriously.

The G8 agenda will be finalized in April. If we act now, we still have time to persuade Ivan Rogers that climate change must be included on the main agenda of the G8 and addressed with the appropriate attention it urgently needs.
