With no regard to the ongoing protests the President of Hungary has signed the deal voted by the Hungarian parliament on the 6th of February for an intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the construction of two reactors at Paks nuclear power plant. Under the agreement signed in January when Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban was on a visit in Moscow, two power generating sets with the capacity of 1.200 MW each will be built with the possible financing by Russia.

The concrete data of the deal are kept secret, the vote in the parliament has been anticipated and the leaders of the governing party, as well as the Prime Minister himself did not vote.

As Greenpeace campaigners said: "Hungary will not be able to take advantage of the opportunities in renewable energy and energy efficiency if the country is committed to such a giga-investment."

As it is extremely clear that the deal has huge environmental, security and economic risks there are ongoing demonstrations but we absolutely need the support of the international community as well as a rapid action to be taken by the Europen Commission.
