Lakhdar Brahimi - United Nations-Arab League Envoy for Syria

As we're all aware, the UN Security Council is currently deadlocked over the possible military intervention in Syria by the USA. The potential devastation, suffering and escalation of Middle East conflict by missile attacks or bombing should be avoided at all costs.

However, doing nothing is not an option because either or both the Syrian Government or the Opposition forces have access to Chemical Weapons that i) contravene international law, ii) have been used or have the potential to be used on innocent Syrian civilians.

Whether the US bombs Syria or not, there is the grave potential for these Chemical Weapons to be acquired and possibly used in terrorist attacks worldwide.

We urgently suggest a resolution be put to the UN Security Council that all stockpiles of illegal chemical weapons in Syria should immediately be put under the control of UN peacekeeping forces to prevent their use by any parties involved in the conflict.

The Syrian Government might be reluctant to comply but they have stated publicly that they have not and would not use such weapons on the Syrian people, so the weapons' quarantine would not affect the Syrian government's ability to defend itself.

In addition, we hope and believe, all permanent members of the UN Security Council can support such a resolution since they are all signatories to the UN Convention on Chemical Weapons.

Armed military intervention by the USA would then be unnecessary.

We very much hope you will consider promoting this idea to all members of the UN Security Council and members of the Arab League

With hope and thanks,
J. Barnes
